The Kasambara-Gilgillie Mountain Region is located in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. This is located between Naivasha and Nakuru along the Nairobi Nakuru highway at 2000m above sea level.
Gilgil has a population of about 50,000 people. The mountain region is considered highly underdeveloped. The farmers live in mud huts and feed on what they can grow themselves. Water becomes a precious commodity especially in times of drought and has to be transported by donkey or even carried by the people themselves. Untreated infections, diseases or not carried out vaccinations can quickly lead to death here.
